Immigration and Integration

October 22nd, 2010 by urrutikoetxea.unai.s

by Unai Urrutikoetxea, Bilbao/Spain.

In the following I will give an overview about the situation of immigration in Bilbao.

In Bilbao there are 30.000 immigrants more or less. More than a half of them come from Latin-America, then a 20% from Africa, a 17% from other European countries and a 6% are Asians. The most of them live in the districts of Ibaiondo, Rekalde, Abando, Uribarri and Otxarkoaga.

In the last 12 years the immigration has increased a lot. Since 1998 the  numbers of  immigrantion has increased from 2.700 habitants to 28.000.

In the following weeks we will research the situation of the immigrants in Bilbao. Are they integrated in our society? And what are their living conditions? It would be nice if the students of other cities could do the same so that we can compare our results.

When we were in Rome a part of our trait d’union group worked on the topic of immigration.

Now we’ are coming here and  we want to continue this project here in Bilbao, but including racism too. We  think nowadays there´s still racism in the society. We want to know the different  opinions from people on the street. We think many people have a negative point of view. Some people think that immigrants come here and take us our jobs, maybe without having in mind the positive aspects for the society.

We’re going to ask  people of different ages and nationalities about their personal points of view, because becoming integrated in an other country  is different for the old and young generation. In fact for young people is easier to become integrated, because their lives start abroad and they haven’t already built something in origin, while for the old generation is different because they have to start again all the things they have done in the native country.

Now our group is formed by Fabrizio, Giulia, Francesco,  Naroa, Ander, Unai and Gonzalo Pueyo.

1. Interview

-         What do you think about immigration?

I think immigration is a shit, the immigrants come to rob our money, they should be      deported.

-         So you think the only come here to steal money?

No, I accept the ones who come to work.

-Do you think immigrants could take your job away?

It depends from the work and the money they  remunerate.

-So you think  immigration have negative aspects?

Well, from one hand yes because they are stealing the money.

-So you think immigration should be forbidden and why?

Yes, simply because they are impoverishing our country, but if the money stay here, I

don´t care.

And now one question about integration:

-Do you think that Muslims or blacks or other ethnical groups have more problems to integrate themselves than a Spanish?

Yes because first they had to learn the language.

-Do you think that they want to integrate themselves?

Yes, the majority yes

-    In Italy there were some cases of Muslim girls murdered by their parents because they fell in love with Italian men and they wanted to marry them. Do you think that a similar event could happen in your country?

I think not. And if it happens the parents should be deported to theiur country. If      they don’t want to mix with us they should be thrown of here.

-Are you religious?

-How does religion influence your culture and your daily life?

At anything. I am not practicant.

The people of the street have very difference opinion about immigration, someone think that it’s positive and others it’s negative.

2. Interview to a student

I = Interviewer

S = Student

I – We’re working on the topic immigration and we would like to know what do you think about it and if it’s positive in your opinion.

S – Well I think it isn’t negative because it is a part of the progress of a nation and if they’re coming to work I think it’s positive.

I – So, don’t you think they come and take the job away to your country’s people?

S – No, no, no… I only think they take jobs that the native people don’t want to do.

I – So, do you think that immigration has positive aspects?

S – Yes, ‘cause most immigrants work in building enterprises and it needs time and white people don’t work in them, so immigrants can do it for them.

I – In which ways do immigrants help the society?

S – In which ways? They do the most physically hardest works and whites are more educated and they work as engineers and architects.

I – And do you think immigration has also negative aspects?

S – The negative part of immigration is that criminality has grown up, but I think that also white people can be criminals not only the immigrants.

I – In Italy there were some cases of Muslim girls murdered by their parents because they fell in love with Italian men and they wanted to marry them. Do you think that a similar event could happen in your culture?

S – Yes of course, because Muslims are radical and it’s possible.

I – But not only Muslim maybe…

S – Yes not only Muslims, maybe also people from other religions or other cultures, too.

I – And how does religion influence your culture and your daily life?

S – Me? I’m not religious.

I – And do you think that your parents would support you if you had a girlfriend of another culture?

S – Yes, I do, they would accept it.
