Music and fashion subcultures, that often come from England or the USA, in the era of instant communication and approval of ideas, have contributed, also among Italian and Spanish youth, to the formation of some groups and categories, that sometimes are simply folkloristic, but that can also bear positive and negative values or have interesting point of view. For example, walking around in the zone of Piazza del Popolo, a central area of Roma , pearching on the steps of the seventeenth-century church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli, you can find flocks of strange human being wearing checkered dresses and with enormous fringes commonly known as “emo”. They are the followers of the religion of Alesana and 30 seconds to mars; they are sensitive, nihilists, full of contradiction, prejudices and piercings (for the pleasure of Italian mothers). Instead, on the stairs of the twin church of Santa Maria in Montesanto, there are dark and metallers, sons of the countercultures of the 80s , today mostly occupied in the conceptualization of the “true love hard-core trash black death jazz metal” e in hunting Emos. Further , in via del Corso, some break-dancers perform in impossible stunts, they are the representers of the large subculture that is linked with rap music, in which are included rappers, skaters and writers. At dusk, from the most expensive shops , the rich boys, the “pariolini”, come out and go to the exclusive pubs of Trastevere, they are generally believed to be fashionistas, spoiled and lovers of night life; they usually live in the neighbourhoods of Parioli or Talenti. But people like this don’t only live in Rome: they are some ‘everywhere in Italy and they have always been given the most different names: sancarlini, oliverini, albarini, chiattilli. But if you want to find the most charateristic elements of the Roman fauna , you have to go to some suburbs, ruled by the “truzzi” or “coatti”: they are addicted to the disco and they really love the most extreme kinds of disco music (tektonik, acid house, goa, techno), they wear very large suits of English football clubs and they are used to “cazzeggiare” (hanging around without doing anything) and to spend their time from afternoon until night in the disco.
